The next update for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s multiplayer mode Metal Gear Online will make changes to respawning mechanics, Konami has announced. Specifically, the update will change respawn placement after players kill themselves or die as a result of being fultoned.
“Bounty Hunter is a mission that is heavily dependent on fulton gameplay, but making this change will add new fulton tactics to multiple mission types by forcing enemy players to the HQ point upon respawn,” Konami said on the game’s website.
Additionally, the patch will change respawn locations for the Comm Control game mode. As it stands, players can respawn at any Comm Link station that their team has captured–even if an enemy player was inside the station and close to capturing it. Here’s how and why it’s changing:
“This felt a bit frantic, and forced players into a stressful situation when claiming a Comm Link, even if they managed to overtake the enemy upon entering it,” Konami explained. “After the update, if an enemy player is in the middle of recapturing your team’s Comm Link, you can no longer choose that location as a respawn point, but now must make your way to reclaim your threatened Comm Link.”
The developer is also tackling an issue involving spawn camping for this mode. If a team had no captured Comm Link stations, they would automatically spawn at their HQ. The opposing side quickly caught on, and this led to “excessive spawn camping with little means of defense or escape.”
“In order to resolve this, we have added alternate spawn points besides captured Comm Links or the HQ, forcing opposing teams to engage from multiple directions,” Konami said.
Additionally, Konami has shared some new images and details for the character Quiet, who comes to Metal Gear Online in March through the Cloaked in Silence expansion. You can see them in the gallery above.
In The Phantom Pain’s campaign, Quiet is an expert sniper. The same will be true for Metal Gear Online.
“More specifically, she will have an aim that’s almost perfectly accurate in both third-person and first-person with minimum to no camera sway,” Konami explained. “This means she has superior skill handling her Sniper Rifle even in close/mid range proximity.”
Quiet also boasts “exceptional movement speed.” In fact, she can sprint infinitely in Metal Gear Online, while players can also press down on the left stick to activate a cloaking effect while sprinting. This boost has a cooldown period, so you’ll need to use it wisely for the best results.
“Her quick movement speed also allows her to jump to the tops of ladders and up to high platforms,” Konami said. “You can fully see these skills in action when playing in maps with multi-level verticality.”
Additionally, Konami confirmed that Quiet will not speak in Metal Gear Online, but she does utilize a “variety of humming noises” to communicate with teammates.
Finally, Konami teased that it has even more “exciting features” involving Quiet to announce in the coming weeks.
The Cloaked in Silence expansion arrives in March, though a release date has not been announced. It comes with three new maps and Quiet as a playable character, as well as a new “Appeal Action” feature. This lets players express themselves with a special pose (battle, dance, hero, etc); up to five can be assigned per character.
Cloaked in Silence will cost $4, while the Appeal Packs will sell for $2 each.
Launching alongside Cloaked in Silence will be a free update for Metal Gear Online that adds a new mission-type called Sabotage. Here’s its description:
“Attackers must destroy or fulton an enemy missile before the round expires; but to access the missile, attackers must first hack into the Terminals to deactivate the Electromagnetic (EM) Barrier that is protecting it. Once the Terminals are hacked and the EM Barrier is deactivated, defenders can choose to reactivate the Barrier or protect the Missile.”
